Leading Successful School Turnarounds: Learning from Research and Practice

The Western Region School Improvement Grant (SIG) Conference was held in Los Angeles on April 5 and 6, 2011. The conference was cosponsored by the Pacific, California, Northwest, and Southwest Comprehensive Centers in collaboration with the five national content centers (Assessment and Accountability Comprehensive Center, Center on Innovation and Improvement, Center on Instruction, National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality, National High School Center) and the U.S. Department of Education.

The Western SIG Conference included opportunities to:

  • Develop deeper knowledge of evidence-based strategies for turning around low-performing schools.
  • Increase understanding of key roles that state, district, and school leaders should play in supporting school turnaround efforts.
  • Learn from national education leaders, researchers, and practitioners who have successfully implemented district and school turnarounds.

The theme for the first day of the conference was effective SIG implementation, while second day focused on optimizing teaching and learning.

Materials from the conference have been archived and are now available. The folder includes the conference program, where you can find the conference agenda, descriptions of breakout sessions, and speaker biographies; keynote and breakout session PowerPoint presentations; and selected session handouts. The table of contents in the folder provides a guide to the available materials.
