In 2005, Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) received a Laura Bush Librarians for the 21st Century grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to conduct a 3-year project designed to provide training for “preprofessionals” from island libraries in the U.S.-affiliated Pacific (American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Guam, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau). PREL designed the Pacific Library Training Institute (PLTI) in response to a survey that established training as the primary need for libraries in these Pacific island nations. This IMLS-funded project included three training institutes, held in the summers of 2006, 2007, and 2008.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute's mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.
