Enhancing community well-being through partnerships in education
Nineteen residents of the U.S.-affiliated Pacific attended the 2006 Pacific Library Training Institute (PLTI) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. The PLTI, funded by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and organized by Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL), took place from June 7–29, 2006, at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Dr. Karen Peacock, Curator of the Pacific Collection at UH’s Hamilton Library, was the lead instructor, working closely with PREL’s Pacific Resource Center Director, Ms. Jane Barnwell, who administers the grant.
By providing professional development to this group, all of whom are preprofessional staff working in libraries in their home jurisdictions, the PLTI seeks to improve library services across the region.
Following is a list of the attendees: Nathaidia Moeia from and Pauline Toluao, American Samoa; Kersweet Eria and Lynn Sipenuk from Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM); Erlinda Naputi and Gregorio Sablan from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands; Walfrid Benavente and Jason Datuin from Guam; Romeo Aliksa and Shra Renton from Kosrae, FSM; Lester Ezekias, Atarino Helieisar, and Bruce Robert from Pohnpei, FSM; Lisa Jeraan and Sistina Elbon from the Republic of the Marshall Islands; Grace Merong and Bedebii Sadang from the Republic of Palau; and Isabel Rungrad and Helen Salap from Yap, FSM.
The 2006 PLTI participants gained expertise in acquisitions, collection management, reference, library instruction and cataloging. The program included morning classes, field trips, and site visits to various Oahu libraries. This section includes copies of course materials that were distributed, as well as group exercises that were used in the classroom.
